Leo's Shopping Trip
Leo spends 1/3 of his money on a book. He then spends 1/4 of the money he has left on lunch. He now has £12 left. How much money did Leo start with?

Step 1: Work backwards from the lunch.
ReplyDeleteLeo spent 1/4 of his remaining money on lunch, so the £12 he has left is the other 3/4.
If 3/4 = £12, then 1/4 = £12 ÷ 3 = £4.
So before lunch he had 4 × £4 = £16.
Step 2: Work backwards from the book.
Leo spent 1/3 of his money on the book, so the £16 he had left is the other 2/3.
If 2/3 = £16, then 1/3 = £16 ÷ 2 = £8.
So at the start he had 3 × £8 = £24.
