I am thinking of a number.
If I multiply the number by 3 and then subtract 7, the result is the same as subtracting 5 from twice the number.

3x − 7 = 2x − 5
Now solve the equation:
Step 1: Subtract 2x from both sides:
3x − 2x − 7 = −5
x − 7 = −5
Step 2: Add 7 to both sides:
x = −5 + 7
x = 2
