Work out the number

I am thinking of a number.
If I multiply the number by 3 and then subtract 7, the result is the same as subtracting 5 from twice the number.

  1. Let the number be x.

    According to the question:

    3x − 7 = 2x − 5

    Now solve the equation:

    Step 1: Subtract 2x from both sides:

    3x − 2x − 7 = −5
    x − 7 = −5

    Step 2: Add 7 to both sides:

    x = −5 + 7
    x = 2
