Marbles in a jar

A jar contains some red, blue, and green marbles.
There are twice as many red marbles as blue marbles, and 6 fewer green marbles than red marbles.
Altogether, there are 54 marbles in the jar.

How many marbles of each colour are there?

    Let the number of blue marbles be x.

    Then:

    Red marbles = 2x

    Green marbles = 2x - 6

    Now add them all up:
    x + 2x + (2x - 6) = 54
    Simplify:
    x + 2x + 2x - 6 = 54
    5x - 6 = 54

    Add 6 to both sides:
    5x = 60

    Divide by 5:
    x = 12

    Now find each colour:

    Blue marbles = x = 12

    Red marbles = 2x = 24

    Green marbles = 2x - 6 = 18

    Blue: 12 marbles
    Red: 24 marbles
    Green: 18 marbles
