Liam's number
Liam thinks of a number. He multiplies it by 3, then subtracts 5. The result is the same as if he had doubled the number and added 1.

A bridge is built across a river. One quarter of the bridge is over the left bank of the river and one third of the bridge is over the right bank. The river is 120 m wide. How long is the bridge?
Let the number Liam thinks of be x.

3x - 5 = 2x + 1
Now solve:
3x - 5 = 2x + 1
3x - 2x = 1 + 5
x = 6
Liam's number is 6.
