How many marbles?

Sophie had a certain number of marbles. She gave half of them to Jack. Then, she gave 12 more marbles to Lily. Now she has 16 marbles left.

How many marbles did Sophie have at the beginning?

Comments

  1. Let’s work backwards from what she has now.

She has 16 marbles left after giving 12 to Lily.
So before giving 12 to Lily, she had:

    16 + 12 = 28 marbles

She had 28 marbles after giving half to Jack.
That means 28 marbles = half of her original total.

So the total she started with is:

    28 × 2 = 56 marbles
