How many apples

Sophie has a basket of apples. She gives half of them to her friend, then eats 3 of the remaining apples. After that, she gives a third of what’s left to her neighbour. She now has 8 apples left. How many apples did Sophie have at the start?

What is the number?

A return ticket from Town A to Town B costs £3.50. A single ticket from Town A to Town B costs £2.40. A group of 5 friends buys exactly enough tickets (single and return) to make a total of 8 journeys between Town A and Town B. They spend exactly £13.90 in total. How many return tickets did they buy?
