Time and speed word problem

A train travels from Town A to Town B at an average speed of 60 km/h. On the return journey, due to track repairs, it travels at an average speed of 40 km/h. The total time taken for the round trip is 5 hours.

What is the distance between Town A and Town B?

Comments

  1. Let the distance between the two towns be x km.

    Time to travel from A to B = x ÷ 60
    Time to travel from B to A = x ÷ 40

    Total time = x ÷ 60 + x ÷ 40 = 5

    To solve, find the lowest common multiple of 60 and 40, which is 120.

    Multiply the whole equation by 120 to eliminate the denominators:

    120 × (x ÷ 60 + x ÷ 40) = 120 × 5
    2x + 3x = 600
    5x = 600
    x = 120

    Final Answer: The distance between Town A and Town B is 120 km.
