The Bookstore Puzzle

Emma went to a bookstore with £20. She bought 3 notebooks and 2 pens. Each notebook cost £3.50, and all the pens cost the same amount. After paying, she had £2.50 left.

How much did each pen cost?

Comments

  1. Total money Emma had: £20

    Money left after shopping: £2.50
    → So, she spent: £20 - £2.50 = £17.50

    Cost of 3 notebooks:
    3 × £3.50 = £10.50

    Remaining money spent on pens:
    £17.50 - £10.50 = £7.00

    She bought 2 pens:
    £7.00 ÷ 2 = £3.50 per pen
