    Let Sam’s original number be x.

    He doubles it:
    2x

    Then adds 7:
    2x + 7

    Divides the result by 3 and gets 11:
    (2x + 7) ÷ 3 = 11

    Now, solve for x:

    2x + 7 = 11 × 3
    2x + 7 = 33
    2x = 33 - 7
    2x = 26
    x = 26 ÷ 2
    x = 13

    Sam’s original number was 13.
