I am thinking of a number. If I double it and then subtract 9, I get 23.

What is the number I am thinking of?

    We can create an equation here using everything given to us in the question.
    Let's set the original number as x. Doubling this gives us 2x and subtracting 9 from here gives us 2x-9 which is equal to 23

    From here, we just need to solve the equation:
    2x-9=23
    2x=32
    x=16
