How many marbles

Emma and Jack have marbles in the ratio 5:3. If Emma gives Jack 20 marbles, they will have the same number of marbles.

How many marbles did Emma have at the start?

Comments

  1. We can set Emma as 5x and Jack as 3x. If Emma gave 20 marbles to jack, she would become 5x-20 and Jack would become 3x+20

    They have an equal number of marbles at the end so we can set the 2 equal to each other:
    5x - 20 = 3x + 20
    2x = 40
    x = 20

    If x is 20, then Emma had 5 * x = 5 * 20 = 100 marbles at the start

    100 is therefore our answer
