We can set Emma as 5x and Jack as 3x. If Emma gave 20 marbles to jack, she would become 5x-20 and Jack would become 3x+20
ReplyDeleteThey have an equal number of marbles at the end so we can set the 2 equal to each other:
5x - 20 = 3x + 20
2x = 40
x = 20
If x is 20, then Emma had 5 * x = 5 * 20 = 100 marbles at the start
100 is therefore our answer
