The Missing Apples

Emily has 36 apples. She gives 1/4 of her apples to her friend, Sarah, and then gives 1/3 of the remaining apples to her neighbour, John. How many apples does Emily have left?

Comments

  1. Emily gives 1/4 of her 36 apples to Sarah:

    1/4 × 36 = 9 apples

Remaining apples after giving to Sarah:

    36 - 9 = 27 apples

Emily then gives 1/3 of the remaining 27 apples to John:

    1/3 × 27 = 9 apples

Remaining apples after giving to John:

    27 - 9 = 18 apples

    Emily has 18 apples left.
