To solve this question, we first need to convert all the prices into pence.
ReplyDeleteA large margarine-beer costs 1 pound 4 shillings and 9 pence If we first convert the pound into shillings we get 20 shillings, 4 shillings and 9 pence = 24 shillings and 9 pence. Next, we can convert the 24 shillings into pence, this will give us 24 * 12 = 12^2 * 2 = 144 * 2 = 288. Now, if we add the 9 pence onto the 288, we get 297 pence which is the price for one large margarine-beer. Now, we need to get the price in pence for a small margarine-beer. 14 shillings is equal to 14 * 12 pence. This is equal to 168 and if we add the 5 pence onto the 168 pence, we get 173 pence. And that is the price of a small margarine-beer in pence.
Finally, we need to work out the difference between 297 pence and 173 pence. This will give us an answer of 124.
