Area and Perimeter

What are the length and width of a rectangle:

1) Whose perimeter is 48 cm and whose width is one half of its length?

2) Whose area is 48 cm, perimeter is 32 cm and length is greater than width?

3) Whose area is 72cm² and width is twice its length?

Comments

  1. 1) If the width is one half of its length, then L = 2W. This means that 2W + W + 2W + W = 48.
    6W = 48
    W = 8
    this means that the length is 16 and the width is 8.

    2) For this one, if the area is 48 and the perimeter is 32, then notice that 12 + 4 = 16 and 12 * 4 = 48. These numbers fit the conditions giving us our answer.

    3)If the width is twice the length, and the area is 72cm², we can form some equations:

    W = 2L
    L * W = 72
    L * 2L = 72
    2L² = 72
    L² = 36
    L = 6
    This means that W is 2 * 6 which is 12.
    L = 6
    W = 12
