Sophie has 4 baskets of apples. Each basket has the same number of apples.

She gives 18 apples to her friend and then finds she has 54 apples left.

    Let the number of apples in each basket be x.
    Since there are 4 baskets, the total number of apples at the start is:
    4 × x = 4x

    She gives away 18 apples, so she is left with:
    4x - 18 = 54
