How many marbles of each colour

Sophie has a box of red, blue, and green marbles. She knows that:

  • There are 3 times as many red marbles as green marbles.
  • There are 12 more blue marbles than green marbles.
  • Altogether, she has 72 marbles.

How many marbles of each colour does Sophie have?

    Let the number of green marbles = x

    Then:

    Red marbles = 3x

    Blue marbles = x + 12

    Now total them:

    x (green) + 3x (red) + x + 12 (blue) = 72

    Combine like terms:

    5x + 12 = 72

    Subtract 12 from both sides:

    5x = 60

    Divide by 5:

    x = 12

    Now plug it back in:

    Green marbles = 12

    Red marbles = 3 × 12 = 36

    Blue marbles = 12 + 12 = 24

    Final Answer:

    Green marbles: 12

    Red marbles: 36

    Blue marbles: 24
