Fractions Word Problem

Sarah has a ribbon that is 3 meters long. She cuts off a piece that is 2/5 of the total length to use for a craft project. She then cuts the remaining ribbon into pieces that are each 1/4 meter long. How many pieces of ribbon does she have after all the cutting?

Comments

  1. Calculate the length of the piece Sarah cuts off:
    Length of piece cut off = (2/5) × 3 meters = 6/5 meters = 1.2 meters

Determine the length of the remaining ribbon:
    Remaining ribbon = 3 meters - 1.2 meters = 1.8 meters

Calculate the number of pieces from the remaining ribbon:
    Number of pieces = 1.8 meters / 0.25 meters per piece = 7.2

Since Sarah can only have whole pieces, she has 7 pieces of ribbon after all the cutting.
